Circular cylindrical drum provided with sieve holes in its mantle and scrapers which correspond with the sieve holes and rotate coaxially with the drum, acts as a separator in a plant for fractionating moistened constituents of household rubbish. In particular the device deals with a fraction consisting mainly or synthetic film and paper, and it divides this into a paper fraction on the one hand and a synthetic film fraction on the other. Arrangements are made to prevent the blockage of the sieve holes by the moistened paper and may consist of a rotary brush. To improve the quality of the fractions whilst superceding the relatively large scale plant consuming large amounts of energy used up to the present, and consisting of willows and cyclones. The new process rests on the principle that wet paper has a much lower tensile strength and is ground up more easily.
