The device contains two permanent magnets (6, 7) which are in the form of rods and are oriented magnetically in reverse directions. These permanent magnets (6, 7) ensure good blasting of the arc even at low currents and when the current direction is changing. The permanent magnets (6, 7) can be protected by means of an electrically conductive coating. Outside the permanent magnets (6, 7), the device can also contain further electrically conductive rods (8), or rods (8) which are provided with electrically conductive coatings, which rods (8) assist in passing the arc on into the extinguishing system (9). <IMAGE>
