In a moulding process, a stream of finely-divided synthetic thermoplastic resin is combined with a stream of filamentary reinforcing material, the filaments having a length between 0.25 and 1 inch, prior to or during delivery to the moulding apparatus. The reinforcing material may be glass fibres, comminuted roving, yarns, tapes, mats or tows, or filaments of thermoplastic resin compositions, the particular composition chosen having a higher softening temperature than that of the finely-divided resin. In specific examples, the filamentary material is fibre glass and the matrix material is styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer, polystyrene, polypropylene, polyethylene, copolymers of styrene and methyl methacrylate or a mixture of polyvinyl chloride with styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer. |
