A multiple pattern sewing machine having a pattern displaying device for indicating a selected stitch pattern from among a plurality of stitch patterns is provided with a malfunction warning system comprising a device for making the pattern display operate in a different state from the normal state in which a selected stitch pattern is indicated. For example the display may be made to illuminate all the pattern indicating lights 43 or to inhibit illumination of any of them by modifying the operation of the pattern selection circuitry. The warning may be given in response to motor overheating, anomalous needle position detection or excessive motor speed demand.
