[Also in Division F2] An overload torque release clutch for a power tool, e.g. a tap driver, comprises a pair of oppositely directed sets of sprags 29, 30 between an outer driving member 12 and an inner driven member 22 connected to the tool socket 10 through a flange 21 against which the member 22 is urged axially by Bellville springs 27 to form a slip clutch 23, 24 which slips on overload, producing relative motion between the driving member 12 and lugs 38 on the flange 21 which abut the operative sprags to disengage the clutch. The sprags are re-set on reversing the drive. A garter spring 35 urges the sprags radially outwardly. As shown, the socket 10 carries a pair of rollers 17 engaging in slots 18 in a sleeve 19 to which the flange 21 is bolted. The torque at which the clutch 23, 24 slips may be adjusted by a nut 28 abutting the springs 27, indicia being formed on the barrel 9 and nut 28. |
