The installation comprises a pressure vessel in which fresh water is injected with the gas while the water is being cooled by contact with a refrigerated surface. A submerisbale pump beneath the surface of the water is now used to create a continuous flow circulation within the vessel. The flow pref. follows a circular path about a vertical axis. The submersible pump is pref. a packaged unit comprising a pump complete with impeller and a drive motor connected to a power supply. The pump inlet and outlet orifices face in opposite directions and arc pref. both located quite near to the refrigerated surface. The refrigerated surface is pref. in the form of a hollow cylinder contg. the pump and coaxial with the vertical axis, about which the water is circulated. The level of water in the vessel is pref. maintained at a constant level by a makeup supply. The makeup supply is pref. directed on to a splash plate in the gas space above the liq. level. High efficiency cooling of water by constant circulation over refrigerated surface. The carbonating unit is inexpensive, compact and uses less energy bulkier and more expensive units.
