Pyrrolidone carboxylate prodn., as anionic polymerisation activator - for pyrrolidone, using inert solvent for pyrrolidone as precipitant for activator

Prodn. of an activator (I) for the anionic polymerisation of 2-pyrrolidone (II) of the formula C5H6O3N.Me (in which Me is Li, Na or K) by the action of CO2 on a soln. of an alkali salt of (II) in (II) is carried out at 80-130 (90-130) degrees C the carboxylate formed being isolated by pptn. with an inert organic solvent (III), which acts as solvent for (II) and precipitant for (I). Pref. (III) is toluene or xylene. CO2 is pref. added for 1-60 min. (I) is obtd. chemically pure.
