1352471 Measuring electric fields BURLINGTON INDUSTRIES Inc 3 March 1972 [11 March 1971] 10063/72 Heading G1U An electric field measuring device comprises a conductive wire mesh probe 1, Fig.1, a source of alpa particles 2 which creates an ionized cloud 4 around the probe, an insulating plate 5 which extends beyond the ionized cloud 4, and an amplifier 6 and voltmeter 7 which measure the potential of the probe 1. In operation the probe 1 is inserted into the field to be measured, for example the atmosphere in a spinning or weaving mill, the ionised cloud 4 preventing either the source 2 or the probe becoming charged by induction - since any charge that may be induced is immediately neutralised by an ion of appropriate polarity from the cloud - and the potential of the probe, which now acts as a constant potential source having the potential of the field to be measured, is measured. The device may be used in association with an air conditioning plant so that when a field above a certain magnitude is detected, ions of the appropriate polarity are added to the air being circulated so that the magnitude of the field is reduced. |
