<p>PURPOSE:To widen the permissible fluctuation range of supply voltage and improve display characteristics by adding a small amount of optically active material into liquid crystal material and making the rotating direction of its intrinsic pitch and the twist direction of the liquid crystal element opposite. CONSTITUTION:In the twisted type liquid crystal display device using nematic liquid crystal of positive dielectric anisotropy, a small amount of the optically active substance whose intrinsic pitch rotating direction is opposite with respect to the twist direction of the abovementioned liquid crystal display element is further added to form the liquid crystal layer. Chiral nematic liquid crystals and cholesteric liquid crystals are used for the optically active substance and, e.g., the compound such as the one shown by the formula is added at about 0.25wt%. This widens the permissible fluctuation range of supply voltage and yields the superior display.</p> |
