A pre-formed parquet plate comprises a number of wooden blocks 2 held together by elastic adhesive tapes 3 the upper surface being sealed by varnish, but the seal being broken at the joints between the wooden blocks, and the extensibility of the elastic tapes being at least twice that of the varnish. Tapes may be replaced by adhesive coated strings in rabets at edges, or by a continuous flexible adhesive sheet. The plates are made by assembling the blocks in rows held together by tapes 3a grinding and sealing the surface and then passing the assembly of blocks between rollers 5 to break the seal in the varnish 6, the strip of blocks then being cut into square sections comprising 5 strips which are joined in the arrangement shown in fig. 1 by further tapes. In an alternative method the blocks are held together by tapes in the arrangement of fig. 1, the surface ground and sealed and then the seal in the varnish between the blocks is broken by pressing the plates between ribbed plates to displace the strips relative to each other. |
