This apparatus has a shaft pipe (3) which passes through all the storeys of a building, has an entry funnel (4) in each storey and ends in the cellar (2) of the building. In the cellar, the shaft pipe is adjoined by a braking pipe (6), the end of which is closed by means of a cover. The air in the braking pipe (6), in particular, is consequently compressed by the downwards-falling laundry bag, essentially filling the pipe cross-section, before it can rush past said laundry bag, with the result that the latter is slowed down by the air. When the laundry bag reaches the end of the slowing-down pipe, it actuates a switch which switches on a motor (15). By means of a threaded spindle (14) and draw rod (12), the motor opens the closure cover of the slowing-down pipe, so that the bag can fall out, and then closes it again. The apparatus is used primarily in hospitals and institutions where there is a large amount of laundry. <IMAGE>
