<p>With a road vehicle with automatic transmission there is often a difficulty in engaging reverse gear, because the output shaft from the torque converter continues to rotate when the vehicle is stationary. To overcome this a brake is fitted to the torque converter shaft and normally held in the off position by a spring. The brake is applied by a diaphragm exposed to the depression in the engine inlet manifold by a valve. This is actuated by the movement of the gear shift rod, which also locks the gear change fork until the brake is applied.</p> |
