1335103 Pneumatic card reader and control unit ATLAS COPCO AB 11 Aug 1971 [25 Aug 1970] 37683/71 Heading G4M A pneumatic program control system has a two-part reading head 17, 23 movable towards each other by spring-loaded pneumatic piston 42 to seal against a punched control card or tape 21 when closed. Each part of the head has aligned reading channels 28 situated in groups in chambers 37, 38, 39, 40 each sealed from the other by partitions and each having separate inlet or outlet couplings 13, 14, 15, 16. In operation air pressure is supplied on line 27<SP>1</SP> to valve 12 and to tape advance piston 43 and cylinder 11. The two part head is closed a short time after the piston 43 is retracted so that a hook 20 engages a new hole 22 in the tape 21. Air is fed to a nipple 44 and through appropriate holes in the tape to chamber 38 of part 17, in which pressure is built up. This chamber checks that the program carrier is inserted and that its reading position is correct. The pressure is fed via couplings 16, 15 to chamber 39 to feed conduits U 1 to U 30 coupled to output nipples on part 23 to feed the signals to appropriate control means such as valves of the system through appropriate holes in the tape. Pressure from coupling 16 is reduced in means 9, and passes via a restriction 8 to coupling 13 and chamber 37 to read detectors such as valves in the system which indicate the positions of various parts of the system via holes in the tape such that when all valves are closed and the control step is complete pressure is built up in the chamber, is amplified by amplifier 10 and operates valve 12 to release pressure in cylinders 11, 43. The control step ceases, the head parts separate, the tape is advanced and valve 12 is reset by piston 43 to commence the next step. In an alternate embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) a circuit providing pulses of air pressure is described. A delay circuit used to provide tape advance after a predetermined period is illustrated in Fig. 6 (not shown). |
