Traction control using two DC motors - incorporates standby series connection used if one circuit fails

The two DC traction motors are operated in parallel with two chopper circuits (7, 8) and are decoupled by two free running diodes (11, 12). If one of the chopper circuits fails then the remaining circuit drives the two motors in series connection. The series connection provides a standby control to move the vehicle to a repair centre. Both motors still provide some traction rather than having to overload a single motor.
