The engine control system is responsive to the ignition and/or injection operations, a transmitter being associated with the crankshaft of the engine. A computer is controlled by the transmitted signals, a final control stage including an electronic switch. Short electrical control pulses are produced by the transmitter in accordance with the number of cylinders of the engine. A spot frequency for determining a speed-dependent numerical valve is counted in a first cycle between two control pulses. In the next successive cycle up to the next control pulse the speed-dependent signal is available to the computer.
