The novel benzocycloheptathiophene derivatives of the formula I and their acid addition salts are obtained from the corresponding 4-(4H-benzo[4,5]cyclohepta[1,2-b]thiophen-4-ylidene)-1-(methyl or benzyl)piperidine derivatives by reaction with a chloroformic acid ester or with cyanogen bromide and solvolytic removal of the ester or cyano group thus introduced. They are also obtained from the corresponding 4-(4H-benzo[4,5]cyclohepta[1,2-b]thiophen-4-ylidene)-1-benzylpiperidin e derivatives by hydrogenolytic debenzylation. The compounds of the formula I can be used as analgesics and antihistaminics. <IMAGE>
