In a bending machine with a fixed support beam (6) and a top beam (11), which can be moved up and down, for clamping the sheet (19), the bending beam (20) is pivoted in order to bend the sheet around the ideal bending edge (21). The machine has an upper, forward-projecting frame part (8) and a pivoted arm (9) which is arranged below the latter, is pivotably mounted in a machine column part (15) and attached to the end of which, via a compression link (10) is the top beam (11). Arranged between the front end of the upper frame part (8) and the pivoted arm (9) is a toggle-lever device (27) which comprises a crank (29) and a link (31) connected in articulated fashion to the latter. The crank is pivotably mounted in the frame part (8) while the link is connected in articulated fashion to the pivoted arm. To lower the top beam (11), the toggle-lever device is extended by means of a hydraulic unit (36, 37), the toggle-lever device bending after passing through the dead centre position and being pressed against a stop (43).
