PURPOSE:To obtain a carboxylic acid ester in high selectivity, in one step, under mild conditions, reacting an aldehyde with an alcohol in the presence of a Pd catalyst and a hydrogen acceptor. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III, e.g. methyl isobutyrate, is obtained by the reaction of an aldehyde of formula I (R=hydrocarbon residue), e.g. isobutyl aldehyde, with an alcohol of formula II (R'=R), e.g. mathanol, at 0-200 deg.C, preferably normal temp.-150 deg.C, in the presence of a Pd catalyst, preferably a catalyst supported on the carrier of e.g. alumina, and in the co-presence of a hydrogen acceptor X, e.g. cyclohexene, dimethyl maleate, furan etc. EFFECT:When a hydrogen acceptor which is converted to a valuable compound by the extraction of H2 (e.g. furan which forms tetrahydrofuran) is used, the industrial advantage of this process is further promoted. |
