<p>The inertial store includes a hollow container (2) which is vase-shaped. It is symmetrical about a vertical axis, and in cross-section is a flared cone, with the widest part uppermost. The top of the cone is turned inwards to support a flat cover completely enclosing a cavity inside. The cone is mounted to be turned about its vertical axis by an electric motor (8) at its lower end, and is held by a bearing (4) at the top. Solar energy falling on a collector (10) is converted to electricity by photoelectric cells and this energy is used to drive the motor. As the container is rotated a heavy load of small lead or other metal balls is also rotated. The balls start to move radially outwards, increasing the moment of inertia of the body. this rotating body with increased moment of inertia is used as a source of energy which may be extracted when the motor acts as a generator.</p> |
