A method of preparing microfibrous tricalcium silicate makes use of relatively cheap starting material, namely crystalline silica. A suspension of crystalline silica, preferably quartz, in an aqueous suspension of calcium hydroxide is heated above the normal boiling point, the molar ratio Ca(OH)2:SiO2 in the system being not less than 2.5:1. The fibres produced have a high aspect ratio, and are useful as a substitute for asbestos. |
