A specific process for the preparation of a titanium component for polymerisation catalysts of the Ziegler-Natta type is characterised in that first (1) in a first step (1.1), a small-particled substance of the general formula Mg6Cl12. x AlCl3 in which x is a number in the range from 0.5 to 3, and (1.2) an alkyl benzoate whose alkyl group has from 1 to 8 carbon atoms are ground with one another in a certain mixing ratio in a ball mill under certain grinding conditions in the absence of diluents; then (2), in a second step (2.1), the substance resulting from step (1) is combined with (2.2) titanium tetrachloride in a certain mixing ratio, the entire mixture is kept at elevated temperature for some time with constant mixing, and the resultant solid is isolated with removal of excess titanium tetrachloride; and finally (3), if desired, in a third step (3.1), the solid resulting from step (2) is recombined with (3.2) titanium tetrachloride in a certain mixing ratio, the entire mixture is again kept at elevated temperature for some time with constant mixing, and the resultant solid, as the novel titanium components, is isolated with removal of excess titanium tetrachloride. The novel titanium component allows polymers of alpha -monoolefins to be prepared not only in high yield, but also with high isotacticity.
