Rotatable cylinders carry, for each alpa-numerical symbol, a conventional type face and a bar-encoded equivalent permitting simultaneous impression of both ordinary (14') and machine readable (15') characters. Optically read, variable width bar codes such as the "elevens" or '2 out of 5' can be used. A bank of such type faced wheels which advance automatically after each impression allow conventional, continuous many digital serial numbering. Copying and duplicating can be rendered more difficult by using stylised code and/or script type characters and special inks.
