The system of flooring using a grid of elements, includes longitudinals n1) which may be plastics extrusions of metal diecastings. Each longitudinal consists of side-by-side H-shaped portions in cross section. Inserts (5) of a suitable material may be enclosed between the sides (4) at the top of these H-sections. These inserts - which may form a tread surface - can be strips of rubber, felt, bristles, textiles etc., to suit the conditions prevailing. The inserts can rest on the cross-arms (6) of the H-sections. The sides can incorporate projecting horizontal ridges (7) spaced at regular intervals and the cross arms can incorporate cut-outs level with the ridges, to retain the inserts.
