PURPOSE:To produce activated carbon fiber with superior adsorption performance in a high carbonization yield by heat treating acrylonitrile type flameproofed fiber contg. cpds. of Mg, Zn, etc. in an inert gas atmosphere followed by gas activation. CONSTITUTION:Polyacrylonitrile type fiber contg. about 0.05-1 wt% as metal of chlorides, oxides, nitrates etc. of Mg, Zn, Sb, Ca, P, etc. is oxidized in an oxidizing atmosphere at about 200-300 deg.C up to about 75-85% of the quantity of satd. oxygen bonds to obtain flameproofed fiber. The acrylonitrile content of the acrylonitrile type fiber is above about 60%. The flameproofed fiber is then heat treated in an inert gas atmosphere at about 300-800 deg.C for about 10-180 min followed by treatment in an atmosphere contg. steam, carbon dioxide, ammonia, etc. at about 700-1000 deg.C for about 10-120 min. Thus, activated carbon fiber is produced. |
