Germicidal mouth- and throat-care compsns. - contg. a water-soluble germicide e.g. chlorhexidine and a polysaccharide e.g. dextran

The compsns. contain a water-sol. germicide in combination with a sol. native and/or modified polysaccharide having a mean mol. wt. of ca. 10000-3000000. Inclusion of the polysaccharide in the formulation increases the activity of the germicide by up to one-third, partic. against Candida and Pseudomonas species in the oral cavity. Pref. water-sol. germicides are salts of chlorhexidine and hexetidine. The germicide is pref. present in a concn. of ca. 0.05-3 wt. %. Pref. polysaccharides are dextrans, hydroxyethyl-starch and carboxymethylcellulose. The polysaccharide is pref. present in a concn. of ca. 0.5-10 wt. %. Suitable formulations include mouthwashes, gargles and sprays.
