PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the culture process for a formic acid-assimilating methane bacterium which can be used in a pH lower than the optimal one for methane formation from acidic methanol-containing waste water. SOLUTION: Methanol is used as a substrate, the methanol is adjusted the pH a little lower than the optimal pH for direct assimilation and the methane fermentation is carried out, after sodium hydrogen carbonate is added or not added, to collect the methane-producing bacterium having good resistance to low pH and to nonionizing volatile organic acid and effect methane fermentation. The low pH condition means a pH of 5.0-5.8. |
