Determin. of the tendency of heated liq. to form deposites comprises (a) heating the liq. (b) adding a soln. or suspension contg. one or more inorganic and/or organic deposit-forming agents, (c) passing the mixt. through a test section of heated tube, and (d) measuring the increase in pressure drop and/or the decrease in temp. along the test section over a predetermined period of time. The process can be used to determine the deposit-forming tendency of crude oil or petroleum fractions (and opt. also to determine the efficiency of antifouling additives) under dynamic conditions analogous to real conditions experienced in refinery equipment (e.g. heat exchangers).
