Flat thermoplastic sheet is heated along linear zones until soft enough to be folded along the softened zones to produce a hollow form, specifically a boat hull. The degree of folding is controlled by support from a suitable solid template or model. The fold is fully developed and then supported during cooling by mechanisms which press the fold panels against the template surfaces in a suitable sequence. Superimposed folds may be fastened together by bolts, welding or adhesives. Esp. suitable for makign small dinghy from rectangular polypropylene sheet. Pref. the fold zones are first moved into a reverse fold to orient the fold zone material sufficiently to be strong enough to service storage of the hull in an unfolded or partially collapsed form. The hulls are intrinsically leakproof, being free of inter panel joints. |
