The milling cutter with inset demountable cutting inserts (4) secured by bolted wedges (18), has a mounting block (2) and a demountable insert retaining ring (3). The bottom peripheral block surface provides a bearing face (16), and the rim of the ring incorporates pockets providing two secondary perpendicular bearing faces (22, 23). The pockets open out onto the rim and the top and bottom surfaces of the ring, and the arrangement permits separate alignment of the bearing faces. A circular block recess may locate the ring, having curved corners (15) forming a cavity (9) bounded by a chamfered corner. Both block and ring may be centred on a drive shaft, the block transmitting drive to the ring through internal keyed joints. Bolts parallel to the shaft may fix the ring to the block, and oblique bolts (24, 25) may fix the wedges which secure the plaques.
