<p>A glass container is coated to protect its surface against abrasion with an aq. soln. of ortho phosphoric acid at a concn. of 0.5-10 (1-4)wt%, the container being held at 300 (300-700) degrees C pref. 450-650 degrees C followed by a coating in the cold zone of a metal stearate. The treatment is esp. for bottles destined to contain fizzy drinks but also for jugs glass tanks, goblets, drinking glasses etc. An abrasion resistant surface which is not opaque as in prior art can be formed using phosphoric acid, the loss of clarity being low if not zero when conditions are judiciously chosen.</p> |
