A refractory slide-gate portion of a sliding gate valve system for a vessel dispensing molten material comprises a metal supporting container or can (12) filled with a low-fired coherent chemical bonded refractory (14). The refractory is formed into a coherent refractory body within the metal supporting can by applying pressure thereto and becomes directly affixed thereto, without the use of refractory mortar.
