The machine closes containers such as boxes or crates which are enclosed by a number of wires, twisting the free wire ends together which protrude from the free edge of the lid and the top of the adjacent sidewall. It comprises a number of funnel-shaped twister mandrels (4), each with an opening in the bottom (30) by which the free wire ends are gripped, together with a drive mechanism turning the mandrels about their lengthwise axes. The mandrels can be mounted in a common plane, while a moving component positions the wire ends in line with them.
