The road surface cutting machine has a fixed protective cage mounted above the cutter roller, extending nearly to the road surface, to safeguard personnel against injury. At one end, preferably the driven end, the cutter shaft (22) is mounted by means of a hinge or claw coupling(32) on a fixed bearing, and at its other end on a tilting bearing which swivels away from the end. The shaft end mounted in the tilting bearing(26) may taper conically outwards(36). This bearing may swing about an axis(24) at right angles to the road surface, and be locked in its setting, by a clamping screw set on the shaft end. This simplifies maintenance work or adjustment of the cutter roller, such as changing individual cutter discs.
