PURPOSE:To prepare the title compound, in high selectivity, by the gas phase catalytic oxidation-dehydrogenation reaction of an alkyl-substituted aromatic com- pound in the presence of molecular oxygen and a compound such as bromine, etc., using a catalyst for gas phase catalytic oxidation-dehydrogenation reaction, having specific composition, and supported to a carrier. CONSTITUTION:An alkenyl-substituted aromatic compound such as styrene, etc., is prepared by the gas phase catalytic oxidation-dehydration reaction of an alkyl- substituted aromatic compound such as ethylbenzene, etc., in the presence of molecular oxygen and Br- and C1-compounds which are gaseous under the reaction conditions, using a catalyst comprising (A) Pd metal, (B) one or more elements selected from Ia, IIa, IIb, VIa and VIII groups excluding Pd, and (C) a metal halide, and supported to a carrier essentially composed of alpha-alumina. EFFECT:Easy preparation of the catalyst. High, long-term stability of the catalytic activity. Free from troubles of corrosion. |
