A solid carbonaceous material containing hydrocarbons such as coal is thermally cracked under direct contact with a bath of molten inorganic oxides in a cracking chamber to form and recover a cracked gas which is highly useful as a starting material for chemical processes and a high-calorie fuel, while leaving residual coke in the bath. A part of the residual coke is further subjected to water gas reaction to recover a valuable gas component as much as possible and the remainder is utilized as a source of heat for the thermal cracking and the water gas reaction. <IMAGE> |
