To produce mouldings having a cell structure, emulsions of 25-90 parts by weight of water in 75-10 parts by weight of a polymerisable or curable, liquid resin/monomer mixture are polymerised or cured in the presence of catalysts at ambient or elevated temperature with shaping and with maintenance of at least 90 % of the total volume predefined by the water-in-oil emulsion. In the emulsion, at least 5 % by weight, based on the finished emulsion containing all additives, of a non-combustible inorganic substance or substance mixture are dissolved or uniformly distributed in extremely fine distribution in powder form having a mean particle size of not larger than 50 mu m in diameter. The degree of dispersion of the emulsion is set so that a predominantly open cell structure is formed, from which the introduced water can easily be removed by drying. Drying of the moulding reduces its content of non-bound water to between 0 and 8 % by volume. |
