A method of mfr. of a building material consists of: (a) forming an aq. emulsion of a polyester-forming material, possibly contg. epoxy groups; and (b) combining this with a setting material of the type which hardens under the action of water, a siliceous material, and a catalyst to initiate polymerisation. The setting material is pref. a hydraulic cement, portland cement, plaster of Paris, lime or a mixt. of lime and portland cement. The aq. emulsion pref. contains an unsatd. polyester resin, giving a polyester of molecular wt. 3100-3600, and with a satd. to unsatd. acid component molecular ratio of 0.8-1.75, partic. 1.35-1.40. 30 or more wt. % of a polymerisable monomer, partic. styrene or methyl methacrylate is pref. added to it. The siliceous material is pref. sand, gravel, or aggregate. The building materials have improved mechanical, thermal, chemical and corrosion resistance, and reduced permeability. They shrink very little during setting. The product obtd using plaster of Paris has similar mechanic-resistance to cement. |
