The device for fixing rails on a sleeper is arranged on the guide plate arranged alongside the rail. A resilient clamp (16) made of bar steel and curved in U-shape is arranged on this plate. The clamp (16) surrounds a fixing screw, and with the free ends (22, 24) of curved sections (30, 32) this clamp (16) presses on the rail base, lateral stop elements (36, 38) oriented essentially perpendicular to the rail bearing on the U-legs (26, 28) of the clamp (16) and preventing their displacement relative to the plate. These lateral stop elements (36, 38) are arranged on the plate. The lower surfaces of the U-legs and the lower surfaces of the curved sections are separated from the upper surface of the rail base by only a small space, which is dimensioned in such a way that, in the event of a tilting movement of the rail, the upper surface of the rail base makes contact first with the lower surfaces of the curved sections (30, 32) and then with the lower surfaces of the U-legs (26, 28) of the clamp (16), before this clamp (16) undergoes plastic deformation. <IMAGE>
