<p>PURPOSE:To improve the space time yield of the title compound in the reaction of monohalogenoacetic acid alkyl ester with CO and an alcohol in the presence of a Co carbonyl catalyst and a basic substance by adding a specific amount of water to the reaction mixture. CONSTITUTION:Monohalogenoacetic acid alkyl ester (preferably the alkyl is a lower alkyl and te halogen is Cl) is made to react with CO and a lower aliphatic alcohol at 10-200 deg.C in the presence of a Co carbonyl catalyst, e.g. dicobaltoctacarbonyl, and a basic substance, e.g. sodium (potassium) carbonate, to afford malonic acid dislkyl ester. Water (<=50 mol%, preferably 1-20 mol%, based on the amount of the monohalogenoacetic acid alkyl ester used in the reaction) is added to the corresponding reaction mixture to improve the reaction rate while keeping the yield of the title compound at a high level.</p> |
