The mechanism increases the force exerted on a rope, e.g. that of a sail on a sailing ship. It works in conjunction with a winch equipped with a ratchet mechanism and incorporates a lever. The lever (5) slews at one end on a pivot point (4), and has at the other an auxiliary winch with ratchet mechanism preventing movement of the rope in the reverse direction. The pivot point of the lever is clear of the axis of rotation (2) of the main winch (1) in the direction of the auxiliary one. the rope is reeved by gand from the auxiliary winch (7) to the main one. Slewing movement of the lever can be limited by stops (9, 10).
