For the layer-by-layer removal of dry unchopped forage from a stack of forage, such as hay, straw or the like, a conveyor (9) provided with entraining tines (10) is provided. A pneumatic extraction apparatus (3,4,5) serves to entrain the forage fed to the suction pipe (4) by the conveyor (9). The support (6) of the conveyor (9) with the lower, linearly guided conveying strand can be moved over the forage, above the surface of the forage, and guided in free suspension to be capable of being lowered into the forage. On both sides of the support (6), a rod with retaining tines (20) can be moved backwards and forwards parallel to the conveying strand by means of a crank drive or cam drive. The retaining tines (20) are rigidly mounted in the direction away from the suction pipe (4) and can be slidingly swung out in the reverse direction of movement over the surface of the forage. As a consequence, the forage is pulled apart and no rolls or tangles can form. <IMAGE>
