Repairing damaged panels by bonded-in replacement piece - with peripheral grooves at boundary to form bonding chamber

The parent Patent describes a method of repairing damaged panels by cutting around the damaged region, then inserting a prepared piece of panel which fits into this opening; the edges of the cut aperture and the edges of the repair piece are each grooved so that when a setting cpd. is injected into the space formed by the facing grooves the repair piece is formly bonded to the panel so as to accept shear stresses. In this add., the edges of the repair piece are loosely guided to the adjacent edges of the surrounding panel; then the filling cpd. is injected through one or more openings to fill up the space surrounding the repaired region. Pref. the filling cpd. is introduced by a hopper into one or more holes leading into the space. More specifically, an adhesive strip may be used to seal the gaps between repair piece and surrounding plate. As compared with the Parent Patent, the difficulties of fitting up a repair piece to the surrounding panel using templates etc. are avoided and the fitting operation is greatly simplified. By allowing the repair piece to float relative to the surrounding panel the chamber to be filled by the setting cpd. tends to compensate in width between different regions, so that the setting cpd. can flow freely all around the repair zone.
