A process for preventing the cracking of ceramic bodies during a hot pressing operation comprises applying a relatively thin layer of a release material to surfaces of the ceramic body which are to be load reaction surfaces during the hot pressing operation. A relatively thick layer of the release material is applied to surfaces of the ceramic body which are not to be load reaction surfaces during the hot pressing operation.
