[Also in Division H1] A retaining device of the kind comprising a plug 1 receivable in a socket 4 and having a groove 2 cooperating with balls 6 urged through apertures 5 in the socket 4 by a garter spring 7, is provided with a plurality of arcuate magnetisable members 8 engaging the balls 6 and movable inwardly and outwardly, the members 8 forming a ring around the socket 4 and being magnetisable by an external field so as to apply an additional inward force on the balls 6 and thus increase the force necessary to separate the plug and socket. The members 8 are each pivotally mounted at a point (10) close to the balls 6 (Fig. 2 not shown) and have small air gaps (9) between their adjacent ends. The device may be used to hold closed the contacts of an electric switch the magnetic field being produced by the conductors of the switch so as to prevent opening of the switch electrodynamically under heavy current conditions. |
