The motor cycle telescopic shock absorber has an external cylinder with a piston projecting into an internal cylinder. The damping characteristic can be changed readily to operate either in compression or extension stage. The cavity of the piston rod has a longitudinally adjustable regulating rod. This rod contacts in its rest position, under spring force a stop flange. The regulating rod is screwed into holding sleeve and this rod has ratchet teeth held in the locked position by locking balls.
