A metal (32) is applied to a plate (31) of transparent material, and the coated plate is covered with a monomolecular layer (34) of an antibody or antigen which reacts specifically with an antigen or antibody, respectively, which is to be detected, by immersing the plate in an aqueous solution of this antibody or antigen. The plate treated in this way is immersed in the solution to be investigated, and the plate is examined, for example by capacitance measurement or by optical means, to find whether a bimolecular or monomolecular absorption layer (36) is adhering to the plate. <IMAGE>
