The resilient sealing ring designed to ensure efficient sealing over long periods at high pressure, is suitable for encapsulated high voltage switchgear. The cross section of the ring (6) is circular, and has a series of radial pointed ribs (6) along it. Each rib has two curved sides. The ring can be enclosed between two rectangular grooves (3, 4) in the housing members (1, 2) so that it is compressed into a rectangular shaped cross section. The two parallel faces at the bottom of the two grooves can be ridged so that the ribs are engaged by the ridges for efficient sealing. In another design, the groove is stepped, and the ribs then seal against the steps under compression.
