A tobacco drying apparatus comprises a rotary drum 2 having a first heating element 3 to which steam is introduced in dependence on the quantity and moisture content of the tobacco as sensed by a weighing and moisture measuring device 12, 14, which element is operative essentially in the upstream portion of the drum, and heat is supplied essentially to the downstream section of the drum either by a fan 58 blowing heated air in countercurrent to the tobacco flow in the drum or by additional heating elements 32 in the drum in dependence on the moisture content of the tobacco as it leaves the drum as sensed by a device 24. |
