A copper wire, e.g. a copper sheathed iron alloy wire which is to be sealed to glass, is provided with a cuprous oxide surface by heating in an oxygen-containing gas at a temperature above 750‹ C., e.g. 950‹ C., and then quenching in e.g. water. The wire may be heated by passing a current therethrough with one contact, e.g. a roller, in the cooling bath.</p> |
