Insulating substrates, e.g. paper, are provided with a transparent, conductive coating containing at least one ionic salt, at least one tanning agent and a hydrophilic binder and optionally a plasticiser, said coating being colourless in the presence of a concentrated solution of the salt(s). Suitable salts are LiCl, CaCl 2 , MgCl 2 , KCl and ZnCl 2 and the tanning agents specified are formaldehyde, glyoxal, diacetyl, mucochloric acid, aluminium formate, Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , K 2 SO 4 , AlK(SO 4 ) 2 , Al(NH 4 ) (SO 4 ) 2 , FeK(SO 4 ) 2 and CrK(SO 4 ) 2 . The hydrophilic binder may be gelatine, polyvinyl alcohol, methyl or ethyl cellulose, hydroxy- or hydroxyethyl cellulose or carboxyethyl cellulose. Glycerine, triethylene glycol or sorbitol may be included as plasticisers on the coating. |
